During our Corsica road trip, we managed to squeeze in an overnight stay at Ile de Cavallo! This is a small secluded island still part of Corsica, and reachable by a 20-minute boat 2,5 km away. And what a paradise that was! Really tiny too: Although the coastline extends 15km, the rather jagged irregular shape makes the surface area a mere 120 hectares or 1.2 square km! We stayed at the one and only hotel there that overlooked the stunning seascape. With just a few big rocks here and there amid a bare horizon in the background, how much more serenely secluded can you get?
And naturally, I was inspired to paint about it! Just like my previous sketches, the shapes and textures of the rocks and the waves of the water were worth exploring. I decided to experiment with colors this time and hence sketched directly with my watercolors rather than with black ink. This time, focus was also on the contrast between the warmer shades of the rocks and the cool turquoise shades of the sea. I have to say I’m surprised at how well it turned out, let alone with myself. Needless to say, Daniel Smith’s watercolors was such a pleasure to paint with.
And with this backdrop, I may have a clearer idea of what my Corsica travel poster may be like! How to make it cute and catchy though still needs to be thought out. Let’s get more ideas rolling!
