And why “charcoal”? Remember those Kusakabe Watercolors Charcoal Series I was telling you about in one of my previous blogs Fun With Charcoal Watercolors? It was a set of 12 charcoal-added granulating watercolors I had bought in Japan during my last visit in July. And after having a go at testing and practicing painting with them, how about proceed with a cute painting already?
I figured these shades may be best suited to landscape, flowers and animals as well as abstract painting rather than portraits and people. An abstract painting I have already done whilst experimenting with the paint. How about animals next then? And of course the first thing that came to mind was cats! The style of our feline friends, along with the flowers, was actually inspired by the print of a dress I had bought in Japan. So cute it was that I was keen to have a go with them on my Strathmore A4 watercolor block. And a success that was! I even managed to paint with all the 12 colors. Can you match them up?
The background could have been a bit more solid and less blooming but I do love how the Light Blue and Marine blended together. And it’s always fun to do something different by getting inspired by other people’s style, especially for the the cats with their various shapes and facial expressions. Had a lot of fun again working with these watercolors that I look forward to doing more. Perhaps landscape and flowers will be my next challenge… and who knows, I might even reintroduce the cats in the scenery too!
