After the Portugal Art Retreat, I decided to promise myself to create a “travel poster” of every foreign country I visit. This idea is actually inspired by the project we did from at that particular workshop on Procreate digital art. And here is my poster from Japan! To be honest, I was only there for personal reasons rather than for sightseeing so it was difficult to come up with a travel poster per se. And hence, I decided make it some promotional material enhancing the “Kawaii” culture which of course originated in Japan. And here we feature Hello Kitty and Little One donned in a yukata!
Kawaii Wallpaper
My poster begins with firstly creating a background. And how about some wallpaper? As outlined in Kawaii Wallpaper that first step depicts alternate and repeated patterns of Hello Kitty, a bunny, teddy bear and a flower. All cute stuff! This idea was actually a development of digitally designing Azuelos ceramic tiles but instead of tiles (which wouldn’t be Japanese anyways), I developed it into a wallpaper. So far so sweet, isn’t it?
Little One in Yukata
And what is a Yukata you ask? It is a form of traditional Japanese attire similar to a kimono but more casual and made of cotton or synthetic fabric, typically a lightweight bathrobe or loungewear and widely worn at outdoor festivals. Being the middle of summer during my trip, this was perfect. I figured Little One would look every adorable too! And what is it with Hello Kitty? In Japanese festivals, kids wear face masks as disguises, and Little One herself has her Hello Kitty mask over her head so you can see how cute she looks!
And here I used Lisa Bardot’s gouache brushes as well as a selection from the PA Patterns Set for Little One’s Yukata. Her lashes are lined with Glitter Pen from the Gold Rush Set. And the Mask Layer tool came very handy for Little One to partially emerge from the pink heart-shaped border. Good practice that was! Am very pleased with how this poster turned out and hope that it will entice the viewers to visit Tokyo and check out its Kawaii culture!
