Happy Mother’s Day (2026)

It’s Mother’s Day today! And oh no, I nearly forgot about it. Am on an Art Retreat in Portugal now, and my mind has been elsewhere until my roommate reminded us. So sorry, Mama! But I did make a beautiful painting for you before I left home. And as done every year, I am dedicating a painting to all the mothers in the world, especially my own late-mother. How could I not?

Happy Times

Although mama and I were very close, perhaps the happiest moments were when I was just a little girl. That age when you’re not yet in school, haven’t made friends yet and feel the closest to your mother. As such, I was keen on the “mama and baby” theme which of course also enhances everything kawaii about our relationship. My mother was very stylish and dressed impeccably, which was typical of the mid-60s, and that rubbed on me as I was growing up. Mama sadly passed away in 2012, but the fond memories remain. What I would do to get those wonderful days back with my mother though! And now this painting comes to light…

Japanese Watercolors

I decided to go for watercolor this time. More precisely, Japanese ones because my mother is from Japan, born and raised in 1930’s Osaka. She would be 95 shortly. Here, a variety of Kuretake Gansai Tambi sets were used. What I love about this series is that the pigments are derived from natural minerals sourced locally. And all the amazing colors! Although not as vibrant as the Italian A. Gallo paints, they are still subtly beautiful. So delicately Japanese. And the fine details were filled in with my newly-opened Holbein’s aquarelle colored pencils, also from Japan!

Quite an emotional session painting this piece, but I am glad I completed it. I think my mother would be proud and happy! And now, I can be in peace knowing I completed this in time to share it with her. Happy Mother’s Day, Mama! I hope you like my little painting I made for this special occasion. And a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there!
