Day 4 of Lisa Bardot‘s week-long painting and Procreate workshop! And once again, lovimg every minute of it, especially as I am learning a new thing everyday. Yesterday afternoon it was urban sketching! That’s right, drawing buildings, architecture, details and location scenes. Yikes, how will I manage?

To be honest, I didn’t think I would enjoy this. However, Lisa showed us the ropes and gave us useful tips such as focusing on the shapes step by step first rather than getting hung up too much on the details. Elaborate stuff can be added on later. And here we went for three different methods as illustrated above: Pencil sketch, alone or traced over with ink, was what I normally do. But going straight into black ink pen or even colored markers? That was daunting! How will I manage without being able to erase any mistakes?

Lisa’s demo though was most useful. We worked on two more mini sketches (as above) using colored markers and before I knew it, this all suddenly became second nature to me. And even without starting with a pencil sketch! That’s right, I was no longer afraid of making mistakes. It’s all a rough sketch anyway and need not be perfect. Given my style of work too, a bit of wonkiness and imperfection makes it all the more cute! So much fun it is that I even went out and practiced more…

And what an amazing revelation this lesson was! I, for one, certainly enjoyed exploring beyond my comfort zone again. Like the botanical sketches from the other day, urban sketches is another subject I can add to my list. Can’t wait to go home back to the Netherlands and start sketching more!
