Day 3 of Lisa Bardot‘s week-long painting and Procreate workshop! And once again, lovimg every minute of it. Today is more practice with gouache paint and focusing on mixing and creating ocean-inspired colors. By combining ultamarine blue with yellow, red and white as well as other shades of blues, we created our own swatches!

The objective was to try and test various permutations of blue hues, tones and tints to discover which work best to resemble an ocean. Once ready, we developed our colors into a mini painting in our sketchbooks! First the ocean by combining the different blues to enhance definition. I myself introduced traces of green to make it more interesting. The sky was then painted by blending some of the blue with white and pressing with a dry paper towel to create cloud imprints. So far so beautiful!

And once dry, we add a boat and some rocks. Of course though I had the urge to make it all kawaii! My style. So “me”. The boat was a pastel lemon yellow with pink sails. And out of the blue (no pun intended) appear our bunny and kitten enjoying the sail! Then instead of rocks, I painted the edges of the caves, something we came across during our boat ride yesterday. And who do we see hanging around there? Little One of course! How sweet is that.

Now this was a fun session! Turning a practice with colors into something cute and whimsical. Furthermore, gouache is not a medium I often use at home although I do have a set of them waiting to be used. The vivid matte finish of this paint makes it pleasant and appealing to work with. Lisa certainly made me further inspired to paint with them more often!
