Pens and Pastels: Flowers

More practice with combining Ecoline pens with Pan Pastels! In between my Procreate tutorials, I try to stay “grounded” in the real world by painting in analog too. One of the things that stirred my curiosity was, “Can we introduce pastels in mixed media too?” Well of course we can! In particular, I was interested to see what else we could use Pan Pastels for apart from pure pastels drawings. Enter U.K. mixed media artist, Katie Moody, whom I discovered whilst googling, drawing my attention to her YouTube video. And what an eye-opener it was!

Here I went for flowers. Sketched firstly with my Ecoline Brushpens the flowers, followed by light grey streaks for the sky. Textures can indeed by achieved by dots and streaks as seen in the ground and the pink flower. Then once dry, tapped lightly some pink Pan Pastel shade on the big flower to enhance vibrancy and a similarly grey one too for the sky to smoothen out the streaks. Result is a rather misty effect. Not quite a Spring feel to it but that is basically what much of March was like this year! Fine details were added with white Uni Posca Pens. And onto the next:

As the above, the flowers were firstly drawn and colored in with Ecoline Paintbrush. And here came a “beautiful mistake”. I firstly colored the sky light blue then changed my mind later and decided to cover it up with a darker blue Pan Pastel. Then realized it was too close to the violet of the smaller flower which would then disappear in the background. After a few trial and error, I came up with brown (raw umber?) and yes, that’s the one! It does resemble soil doesn’t it? The outlines of the plants were then enhanced with colored pencils and finer details drawn in with white Uni Posca Pen.

And the above are the mediums used for this experiment. Ecollne brush pens seemed like a perfect choice for this purpose as the finish is quite sheer and the application quite an even light touch. As with the Pan Pastels they give a soft velvety finish, ideal for landscapes and backgrounds. As for colored pencils, Katie uses Caran d’Ache’s Luminance which I don’t have and hence I stuck to what I already own, Staedler’s Ergosoft. All the drawings were done in Strathmore’s Sketchbook for Watercolor. And now looking forward to practicing more and hoping to paint some kawaii mini drawings of Little One soon!
