Sharing again more of my Procreate artwork from Lisa Bardot‘s mini tutorials! Recently I signed up for a Procreate digital art workshop in Algarve, Portugal with this lovely American illustrator in May. How exciting! And in preparation for it, she suggested I follow her 4-week tutorial, Kick Start with Procreate. And what useful tips did I pick up from that. Although she starts from the very basics, we quickly learn and cover areas that even I myself had never discovered earlier! The next five units are on Animals, and although I have been grouping the other units under Food and Plants, I decided to write about these next ones individually this time, since I have a lot of interest in painting animals!

Today was about Snakes! The main objective of this lesson was to get familiar with Color Schemes, or as Lisa refers to as Colorways, easily adjusted via hue (color), Saturation (vividness), and Brightness (value). What fun that was! Drawing the snake itself was a simple process using just one brush (Blackburn) and simply switching the sizes. And making it all pretty too with flowers and leaves as well as a background with stars. So far so good! We started with cool colors here (below) then had a go at switching to warmer tones. At this point, I thought: Why not create all four seasons?

This one below is the same snake but a warmer version. It of course helps duplicating the drawing from the start when playing around the colors. Here, I created four copies, one for each season. Now this is red hot!

And now Spring. Such pretty combination of pink and green to match the blossoming flowers and leaves coming back to life!

Finally, we have Autumn. Although I could have used more orange and brown shades to make it more autumnal, I was keen to make my snake all pretty and colorful so opted for violet and turquoise instead. It is such a depressing season so why not brighten it all up?

And here we have them! An informative lesson about color schemes and experimenting with hues, saturation and brightness to create some beautiful series starting with one single painting. I ought to try that out with some of my characters too!
