Greetings from Japan! Following my series of some quick daily art journaling whilst in Tokyo as outlined in Tokyo Doodles, here is another one from the end of last week. This is so much fun, and I’m always looking forward to getting creative after a hectic day out!
Last Wednesday, I met up with my cousin and his lovely wife. They travelled all the way from Utsunomiya to Tokyo by Shinkansen bullet train, and we had lunch at this Mandarin-Chinese restaurant near the station. Theme was Afternoon Tea with cute little sweets and savories laid out in a 3-tier rack, What a delicious feast that was! The panda mochi pastry was so cute that I made a point of drawing it. Then the rest of the other tidbits followed, whilst admiring the various shapes, colors amd textures they came in. Each of these cute tidbits drawings of course can also be the basis for abstract paintings!
And the next day I was in the mood of some collage. It was a Thursday, and off to Osaka by Shinkansen bullet train to visit my other relatives. At the station I helped myself to some bento box (Eki-ben) of shoyu-marinated baby clams on rice. Yum! And the bento was wrapped in paper featuring clams which I liked so much that kept it and upon my return to the hotel, I glued a portion of it in my sketchbook! In the bento also laid a piece of green plastic sheet used to separate the food. And that too I included in my sketchbook! Then some flowers: Those orange circles are actually cut out from a piece of ribbon! Amazing how simple scraps can be recycled to create some amazing artwork…
Incredible what I can create with the limited art supplies I have with me! It’s also a great opportunity to discover new ideas and methods of creating something wonderful, however simple. Now I’m very excited to start a new page everyday which makes traveling all the more adventurous!
