So much fun following Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals on-line classes! This next unit is Art Journaling + Adding Your Sketches in which we work on our art journals by incorporating separate animal sketches and collage papers to create a mixed media painting. A loosening up exercise again, this was so much fun! The first thing that came to mind though, was a cat of course but also another “heatwave in Europe” theme. What else can we think about when it’s 35 degrees (Celcius) outside and need to vent (excuse the pun) about how hot it is. Not often do we get this unbearable heat!

My cute little kitty was firstly doodled on a brown paper bag with my black Pitt Artist’s Pen (not included in the photo below as I forgot). Setting that aside, I filled the page of my Strathmore’s Visual Journal Bristol Paper with all sorts of scrap collage papers (wrapping tissues and paper napkins to name a few) and randomly spread some Teal and White acrylic paint and scribbled with neon pink paint pen. The cat sketch was then added on top, painted on in white with more layers of yellow and neon yellow acrylic in the background to enhance the feeling of heat. It felt quite liberating I must say getting your fingers all messy with the paint!

This session I enjoyed so much! It didn’t call for perfection so I love how quirky and cute my cat turned out to be. The rather brightly yellow and orange background clearly shows what’s been on my mind and I went for it with so much gusto. Despite the unbearable heat making me feel lethargic and a bit lazy, this painting sure evokes so much energy! Enjoyed it so much that I decided to do a similar session, this time incorporating Little One, so watch this space…
