Let’s Cool Down!

With this unbearable heatwave in parts of Europe expected to continue till this weekend, some of us are dreaming of cooler weather! Even the thought of snow and ice seems appealing. If that’s too extreme, though, then how about the coming of Spring? A combination a fluffy wooly coat and flowers in the hair is still good enough for me. And here is a cute cat painting to illustrate it! Although completed last May and not yet shared, better late than never. And perfect timing in fact, as this incidentally “in between winter and spring theme” now seems so refreshing!

This painting was actually done whilst following another of Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals on-line classes. Next unit, Adding Shapes + Embellishments involves layering with paper and paints and ending up with interesting effects and depth. Here, we start by sticking on torn bits of paper on canvas board and working our way through layers with paint and more paper if needed to create a cute animal painting. Although Juliette herself went for her customary owl, I chose to paint a cat! This is the beginning:

Look at how amazing that collage turned out to be! Among the papers used are wrapping tissue, Lokta, Japanese-language newspaper and origami to name a few. It looked so pretty that I almost regretted having to paint over them! And the art supplies revolve around Golden Fluid Acrylic which Juliette uses in her demos. As for the rest, I tend to use what is available since many of her art supplies are U.S.-based and not readily available in Europe. The painting was embellished as finishing touch with glitter glue/gel and some pink sequins.

Although I’m quite satisfied with how this piece turned out and had fun working with it, I have to say it is not my personal best. The attempt is to work on it further but I think I may just leave it and give it a separate shot when I have the chance. As I still cast may doubts over it, though, the painting does give a refreshing effect in this scorching heat!
