Primitive Pussycat

It’s been some time since sharing some of my artwork with Juliette Crane’s Whimsical Animals on line classes. Yup I’m still following! Just been rather occupied with the Procreate classes and workshop with Lisa Bardot and totally forgot about the other artists. Sorry, Juliette! And in this next unit called Creating a Primitive Animal, we do a quick and easy painting on our sketchbook using a variety of mediums but this time, minimize layers as much as possible. Hence, as you can see you only see a single layer of watercolor, paint or pastels followed by a solid oil stick background.

Here, I used Strathmore’s Mixed Media 11″x14″ sketchbook 300gsm Vellum finish which holds the oil pastel well. Splotches of watercolors and watersoluble pastels were first randomly applied wet then once we had our character in mind, brushed some brown Pan Pastel for the face and traced outline with a black Stabilio pencil. Sennelier’s blue oil stick was used for the background,, whilst Antique White Shiva Oilstik was smeared on he head for a smoother texture. So happy with this painting! Simple but sweet.

And since Juliette named this lesson Creating a Primitive Animal, I thought I’d name my work Primitive Pussycat! And now, I would love to repeat this process again and create another character. Something to do when I want to warm up or wind down….
