And safely arrived in Lagos, Portugal yesterday for Lisa Bardot‘s week-long painting and Procreate workshop! First full-day today starting with a creative warm-up, how exciting! Naturally went for something kawaii and so me: Just some random doodles of whatever came to mind…

After that a go with sketching flowers outside. Yikes! But Lisa showed us the ropes and gave us more confidence to begin. First observe closely the flowers then start with simple shapes and move onto the details. That worked rather well. Just need to practice more!

After some healthy lunch, back to the studio with some introduction to gouache paints and color theory. That was quite an interesting session… mixing colors using only primary colors of blue, red and yellow then slowly introducing white.

We developed the session further by creating swatcheds of earthy and muted tones. Imagine how many variations of them you come up with just with those three primary colors plus white! Earthy muted colors are not the sort I would normally choose to paint with as my preference lies with bright and vibrant colors, but I was amazed to discover how beautiful they can be. Am most definitely willing to experiment with sone in my future work!

Day was concluded with painting flowers with gouache. This time we used tubes of other colors. Here I went for the Bindweed, Geranium and Spanish Lavender. Didn’t go too badly considering it’s my first time!

I may be a bit crap at painting flowers but who cares, I had so much with exploring beyond my comfort zone… and enjoyed every moment of it! That’s the most important. Should paint with gouache more often at home! Tomorrow we apply what we had learned about gouache on Procreate. Can’t wait!
