Hi again, it’s been a week or so since my last write-up as we been on vacation. Itinerary was so packed that I unfortunately had no chance to paint, even sketch, let alone write! Although we had a wonderful time away, it is good to be back to get creative again and catch up on my blogs! Today sharing another painting from a few weeks ago following Julliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals on-line classes…
Start with Color
This unit is Workimg Backwards during which we firstly apply a layer of color before drawing our animal. Then we fill it all in, thereby piling up more paint and adding more depth. I went for an A4-sized Bristol paper here and colored in a teal rectangle with some Shiva Oil paint stick. Like Julliette, I left the sides of the paper blank.

My Ginger Cat
Once dry, I proceeded in outlining my cat with a black marks-all pencil. Then comes the fun part: filling her in!. Ginger was painted in a combination of yellow and orange, applied with fingers for a stippled effect. Eyes were colored in with iridescent green with a brush. Then the edges of the paper and ground were in Payne’s Grey, further layered on with white oil paint stick and acrylic paint. Details were then incorporated with fluorescent red collar, then black marker and traced over with glitter glue for the lashes. And look how sweet she looks now!

Art Supplies
And here is what I used for this cute painting! Shiva oil paint sticks are great as they dry rather quickly. As for paint, Golden Fluid Acrylic is typically used, but for the iridescent green, I went for Old Holland. Amsterdam Acrylic is also another recommendation as they’re more affordable but still professional grade. For paint markers, I like Molotow.

A quick and less intensive session this time. Nevertheless fun and interesting as the method was quite different from what we’ve been used to. And although Julliette paints an owl in her demo, as she frequently does, I went for a cat as it’s merely my preferred animal to get creative with. And now looking forward now to my next lesson with this amazing artist!
