And a Happy Valentine’s Day to all you love birds out there! Although we should be celebrating with romantic candlelight dinner and bouquet of flowers and chocolates, my partner and I just spend it like any other day. “Everyday is a Valentine’s Day for us,” my partner chimes in. Now how sweet is that! And he’s right. Why make the special effort to be nice to each other just on this particular day when you can make everday you spend together special? We still surprise each other with gestures of love and cherish every moment we share. But still… I wanted to create something special for Valentine’s Day. Just to remind ourselves how much we mean to each other. And of course more the reason to bring about the kawaii elements of our strong relationship!
This year, I went for pastel drawing. It’s been a while since painting with dry media so thought I’d my paintbrushes and iPad a little break today. And on a sheet of Clairefontaine”s Pastel Mat paper, I set about my sketch with white pastel pencil. Love how this paper has that “teeth” texture to grip the pastel pigments to minimize the mess from the residue. Brown pastel paper was actually not the initial choice as it happened to be the last paper in the pad but great coincidence as it is indeed the color that resembles chocolate, perfect for Valentine’s Day! Once pleased with the composition, I set about coloring. Larger areas like the face and outfits were filled in with Pan Pastels to ensure even coverage, whilst soft pastel,sticks were for the hearts. For finer details like the eyes, pastel pencils were used.
So here we are! A romantic and cute little painting of him and me on Valentine’s Day, like it were another day because everyday is Valentine’s Day for us!
