As much as I love lots of animals especially cats and kittens, not all are cute. Some of our neighborhood feline friends wander into our garden which is sweet but only if they’re there to enjoy the view and the feel of green around them. But some use it as their toilet! Not kawaii at all. To deter them, I began sprinkling dried used coffee grinds on the ground as cats don’t like the feel of rough powdery elements between their little toes. But does it work? Not all the time. Occasionally a few still come in. Touch wood, though, we’ve not had any “toilet” issues with them.
Draw the Cat
One of such cat that comes in a lot is this brown one that belongs to the house, I believe, across from us. She’s brown and has a red collar. So far no trouble from her. She’d just pit pat in, have a meander and when caught, wanders off. Poor cat! But then again we want to protect our garden, don’t we? And here’s a Procreate digital painting of this naughty brown cat! After the initial Procreate Pencil sketch, I airbrushed it in with some dark tan as the base color. Fur was then layered on using the Elegant Fur #1 brush in brown from the Eldar Zakirov set purchased separately as add-on. And what do you think of this cute furry texture?

Further Painting
Not sure what exactly the color of this cat’s eyes are, but I decided on blue. And what a pretty blue it is! Here I used the Neon Tube from the Lights brushes. The collar was then filled in with Neon Red. For the background, I went for Grunge Watercolor from Jason’s watercolor brushes, blue for the sky and yellow-green for the grass. Clouds were then incorporated for texture for the sky, and a Shader stamp for the ground. So far looking good!

And the Rest Follows…
I wanted to make the background as abundant as possible with lots of plants and flowers, just like our garden. A great opportunity, then, to play around with another of Jason’s texture brushes from which I went for three different leafy looks each with a different shade of green. For further effect, I also experimented with various Light Modes (Hard Mix, Vivid Light, and Lighten) which also came handy when I painted in the pink flowers as well. As finishing touch I introduced some Flower Power from the Procreate Vintage range on the bottom edge and lined the whiskers an eyes with a Glitter Pen. And here we have it, our naughty brown cat in the garden!

Another fun experience with digital painting! Procreate is such a wonderful tool to work with, giving many possibilities to experiment. I love that you can play around with various textures and light modes to create something quite interesting. And now, this naughty brown cat looks not only amazing but also adorable! Hopefully she will stay well-behaved though and refrain from damaging our garden…

This is such an interesting technique! I never would have thought of using coffee grinds to deter cats. It’s a great idea! The painting is so cute, you did an amazing job! Thank you for sharing your experience!
