Walking in the Snow

This weekend additional snow in the Netherlands! And of course, Little One is so thrilled to experience the heaviest snowfall apparently in more than 45 years. So heavy has it been that the country was in a standstill with minimal transport service and warnings of dangerous roads. Even the Christmas trees outside could not be put away! Yesterday, though, it started raining which some were either relieved or disappointed about as the snow began melting, but in the evening it started snowing once again! “Yay,” rejoiced Little One, “I now wanna go for a walk in the snow!” After days of being cooped up in the house, she was keen to give it a go as the weather looked a bit more manageable. And what a good opportunity it is to wear her new pretty hot pink snow hat and matching scarf she got for Christmas! Isn’t she gorgeous? And as she was walking out of the door, a neighbourhood dog came and approached her! How sweet is that. Now she is really going to have one fine walk in the snow!!

So cute that I had to paint bout this! I wanted to make this painting as snowy as possible with textures. First a dollop of gesso blended with some blue liquid watercolor was spread across a blank piece of A3-sized Canson’s Mixed Media paper. Then once completely dry, I made a rough sketch with my Stabilo aquarelle pencil. The subjects were then filled in with Golden’s fluid acrylic paint, whilst the hot pink hat was with ARA’s paint and her eyes in Sap Green Hue. Origami paper collages were then glued onto her hat, dog collar and tree. Then I went over the sky a bit with the Light Blue and the ground with a mixture of Azo Nickel Gold and Titan Green Pale. And now time to add the snow! Tapped some Titanium White in the background, focussing on the ground to give it some layered texture. Texture was further enhanced by applying thicker white acrylic paint with an old sheet of bubble wrap. How cool did that turn out to be!

In the end, I wanted to introduce some finishing touches with some bling. No painting is complete without some! First I lined her lashes with stickles glitter glue then spread a bit of glitter gel on her dress. Finally a sequin on the dress as well and on top of the Christmas tree. Unfortunately, though, the photographs don’t do much justice to show the shimmer because of the angle. Managed, however, to capture some close ups. Aren’t they stunning?

Very pleased with how this painting turned out! I knew exactly what I wanted from it, and it worked rather well. Loving the texture I managed to achieve to enhance the snowy image. And the shimmer looks wonderful! Just a pity it doesn’t show up well in the photograph of the painting itself. Nevertheless, Little One still looks gorgeous and very happy being able to wander in the snow. Have fun and be careful!
