Christmas Tree Aura

It’s been some crazy busy past few weeks especially after my Tokyo trip that Ive not bee been too enthusiastic about the festive season this year. Too stressed. Not even a Christmas tree up in our house! Now that’s really something. That said, I’ve been making the effort to set some time aside getting creative to clear my mind and slowly get myself in the Christmas spirit. And now, how about painting a Christmas Tree to make up for not having a real one in the house this year?

Here I went for Granulating watercolor. And how do these differ from the regular stuff? Granulation occurs when certain pigment particles are uneven and show up as small flakes and dots on paper thereby producing texture and separation of colors. When I was in Japan last month, I bought a pair of Granulating watercolor sets by Kuretake. I do already own some granulating watercolors but they are in tube forms so was curious as to how the pan forms would turn out to be. For the star, I used Holbein’s neon orange.

Now I just love how this tree turned out! Notice how the colors also feather as well as granulate. I also introduced a wash of these watercolors to give that aurora look, And what a perfect opportunity it was experimenting with my new art supplies! Now I’m eventually getting into the festive mood and hope that next Christmas will turn out much more relaxed.
