Next installment of the Line Drawing unit from Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals on-line classes! To recap, line drawing is about sketching without lifting your pencil. Sounds daunting, right? I thought it too but was amazed how interesting and cool they turned out during my first attempt using charcoal and pastels. As Juliette mentions, it certainly stimulates creativity by pushing you beyond your comfort zone. This second practice involves white stabilo pencil and gouache on black paper! I thought a switch from dry media like pastels to wet media like gouache would be a good idea. Quite a different mood all together!

And what fun that was, especially with trying something different! I figured that a medium as thick and chalky as gouache would suit black paper best, as I already had a go with pastels. And look how my cute little kitties pop out! I never even attempted line drawing till this lesson, and after the previous drawing I’m now hooked! And once again, being able to push my comfort zone further enabled me to experiment with various colors not necessarily associated with cats. Who would have thought about making cats so colorful! And why not? The objective of this exercise is indeed to explore creativity further, and that certainly worked for me. Now I’m going to try this again with digital painting so keep your eyes peeled!
For this sketch these are what I used:
