Line Drawing Cats: Pastels

Back to following Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals on-line classes! This next unit is about line drawing, that is, sketching without lifting your pencil. Sounds daunting, but I was amazed how interesting and cool they turned out. As Juliette mentions, it certainly stimulates creativity by pushing you beyond your comfort zone. This first practice involved charcoal. As you can see, I made a few cute doodles of cats on a blank sketchbook page. How kawaii! And as Juliette suggests, why not color them in too? Here I went for soft pastels.

And what fun that was! Love how my kitties turned out so cute too. I never even attempted line drawing till this lesson, and now I’m hooked! And being able to push my comfort zone further enabled me to experiment with various colors not necessarily associated with cats. Who would have thought about making cats so colorful! And why not? The objective of this exercise is indeed to explore creativity further, and that certainly worked for me. Now I’m going to try this again with other mediums, but for this sketch these are what I used:
