The third and maybe final painting from the Sketching with Paint unit of Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals classes! Since I was keen on practicing more before moving onto the next unit, I decided to repeat this lesson one more time. This unit aims to teach us to loosen up and involve white paint and pastels to add softness to our whimsical animals. Instead of an animal this time, though, I was curious as to how Little One would turn out. And what have we here? An adorable painting of her!

Little One was first sketched on A3 paper with black charcoal stick in both stick and vine forms, then filled in with soft pastels. Then came the white paint carefully applied on with brush which worked really well for the face and dress. The eyes, however, turned to a bit of a milky shade but I nevertheless left it as is. For the hair, I was anticipating the black to turn a bit grey and hence skipped the white paint and simply spread the charcoal and brown pastel with a wet brush before going over it with the charcoal again. White areas were merely filled in with the white paint. And here are the supplies used:

This time, just charcoal and pastels along with the white paint. No embellishments, as I decided to keep it simple. And now I really do see the intended softness in my characters! Combining soft pastels with white paint is definitely a great method to keep in mind when wanting to achieve this effect. Such softness indeed enhances the kawaii in Little One!
