Black Cat with Party Hat

Back again after a busy week! Sharing here a painting I made whilst following Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals classes,. This unit is Sketching with Paint, a loosenung up exercise involving white paint and pastels to add softness to our whimsical animals. Here is the first in the series!

My chosen character was a black cat. And here came the challenge with softening the painting with white paint without making it too grey! Cat was first sketched on A3 paper with black charcoal stick in both stick and vine forms, then filled in. For the non-black areas , I used soft pastels. Then came the white paint carefully applied on with brush. I expected the black to turn a bit grey and the solid colors to turn pastel shades of course and hence went over them with charcoal and pastels again where needed. As I was not too keen on the party hat being yellow, it was painted over with gold! And here are the supplies used:

Not too bad for the first attempt! Nevertheless, I feel I need to practice more and get the knack of “adding softness with white paint” before I advance to the next unit. So do keep you eyes peeled for the next painting!
