Keep It Simple: Bunny Rabbit

A continuation of the Keeping It Simple unit of Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals online classes! This unit involves an 11-minute project during which we paint our animals with a variety of mediums. Key here is, for a change, no layering; just keep it, as per the title, simple! For this unit, I created a few paintings because I felt I needed, firstly more practice and secondly more time to loosen up before continuing with the next project. Plus I was having so much fun with it! And after previously painting my Teddy Bear, I now came up with a kawaii bunny rabbit in a dress. So cute!

Choice of paper was Strathmore’s A4-size Bristol Paper. I began by a random wash of Kremer’s Pigmente watercolor and although Juliette goes for chalk pastels, I opted for Derwent’s Inktense instead. This would be followed a rough sketch with black Stabilo pencil and smudging some Pan Pastel and fluorescent pink soft pastel for the face. This time, I decided to experiment with oil mediums like oil sticks (Sennelier and Shiva) and its resistant effect on water-based mediums. Look how cool the purple droplets turned out, reminding me of Prince “Purple Rain” haha! And I love the green grass too, scribbled on with oil stick. Below illustrates the supplies used:

Loving how my Bunny Rabbit turned out! Compared with the muted tones from the Teddy Bear painted previously, I returned to vivid colors again. Although painting simple sounds easy, it came with its challenges as well. Painting without layers means that mistakes or any parts you don’t like would be difficult to hide especially with watercolor. This is why I felt I needed to repeat this unit. That said, the point of going “simple” is to loosen up and not be too hung up about getting it all perfect, right?. In fact, I think my Bunny Rabbit looks even more adorable like this!
