Another discovery with the Procreate digital painting app! Were you aware that it also comes with Drawing Guides to help you create that perfect symmetry in your drawings? I didn’t, even after more than 5 years of using this app! And how do you go about this? Upon opening your artwork page, first click Action which is the wrench icon on the top left. Then activate the Drawing Guide by switching it on, click Edit and then appears a menu on the bottom of the screen to give you a choice among 2D grids, isometric shapes, perspective and symmetry. How cool is that! I in fact shared here a very cute drawing Catspective using the perspectives guide. And now I’m sharing you a simple portrait of Little One being guided by symmetry!
And how did this work? When choosing the symmetry guide, the screen firstly gets equally divided between left and right sides. Then as you start drawing on one side, the strokes are automatically repeated on the other, thereby creating a mirrored image! I myself started with a sketch with Procreate Pencil and was quite fascinated to watch it all happen! Further found it quite a handy tool since, as you gathered from my work, I do have trouble making the eyes perfectly symmetrical. Sketch was followed by another layer of coloring it all in also with the symmetry guide. Switched the guide off for the background layer though and introduced some dotted texture to make the painting more interesting. And what fun was that! I ought to use this more often especially for creating portraits. How about some cute animals next time?
