Symbols of Isola Bella

Last Augusf my family from Japan were over in Italy for vacation, and we decided to meet up with them there!  A lovely place called Stresa by the Borromean islands along Lago Maggiore we ended up. On the second day, we had a short ride on a small ferry to one of the islands called Isola Bella.  And what a pretty little island it is!  Measuring a mere 320 meters by 400 meters, its main highlight is the huge 17th century palace with accompanying gardens.  And so intriguing it was that I took a lot of photos not only of the views but also of various symbols in and around the castle!

And why this interest in symbols?  Following Australian artist Tracy Verdugo‘s art classes, we learned that symbols could be used as a basis for abstract paintings! They are most handy, for instance, when you need a kickstart for ideas or are stuck in the middle of a painting.  As you can see above I found quite a few mysterious yet cute symbols at the palace in different shapes and forms which I jotted down in my small sketchbook. I ought to get in the habit of doing this more often! For now, though, I got some cool-looking inspirations I can refer to in my upcoming paintings. Can’t wait to try some out!
