And now I’m finally back to resuming Juliette Crane’s Whimsical Animals on-line classes! Apart from being occupied with work and home stuff, I was also working on other creative projects in between and was not yet quite ready to focus on her classes. But great to get my mojo back and looking forward to more from Julliette!
Creating Background
And here comes the next unit, More Ways to Add Painted Pages. And what is meant by “panted pages” in this case? They are merely sheets of paper on which you painted either as an experiment, blotting or mixing paint or even as an artwork you had started and no longer liked but prefer to recycle instead of throwing away. And now, on a square 20×20 cm canvas, I begin by tearing out and glueing on some painted pages. Mine were bits from an unwanted landscape painting I no longer liked. Can you see it? It’s in yellow and green. A variety of acrylic inks (violet, magenta, pearlescent blue, fluorescent red and bit of white) and sprays of isopropyl alcohol were then layered on to create this mysterious effect. Let’s see what we can create next!

That Tuxedo Cat…
I think I’ll go for a tuxedo cat this time. That’s right, I’m still saddened about that new neighborhood cat who never returned! Remember that cute little kitty I came across a few weeks ago about which I shared here along with my sketch Anyone Seen This Cat? Perhaps this would be an opportunity to pay further tribute to her! On this colorful background, then, I set about sketching my cat with water soluble pastel before filling her in with titanium white and payne’s grey acrylics. The eyes were then painted in green gold. I didn’t work on the background too much as I loved how it was already. All I did was introduce the sunset and the grass. Finishing touches included some glitter on her eyelashes and her whiskers as well as part of her body. And now!

Mediums Used
And here are what I used for this painting. Golden Fluid Acrylic are normally my choice of paint particularly when working with Juliette. As for acrylic inks, which give a thinner consistency, I love those by Daler & Rowney, particularly the shimmery ones. I also adore Holbein’s products, including the heavy body acrylic paints in fluorescent shades. For shimmer and bling, I have a variety of products such as Ranger’s Stickles, Art by Marlene and Cosmic Shimmer. Acrylic Binder makes a wonderful glue for sticking on thick painted pages too.

Painting my tuxedo cat was a bit of an emotional journey. Weeks have gone by, and that cat is still in my mind even if I had met her once. Staying creative though, even over how much I miss her, certainly helps me deal with the pain better. Additionally, it is wonderful to go back to painting with Juliette Crane. As with all classes, you learn and discover more. I now feel further motivated to get creative again and can’t wait to start the next one!
