Chiemsee at Sunset

Traveling again! Last week we were on our week-long road trip to Slovenia, and on our way we stopped overnight by Chiemsee, a lake in southern Germany. What a stunning view it was at sunset! The water itself was a beautiful turquoise-teal, the beauty of it enhanced by the spectrum from the sun ranging from orange to violet against the blue sky. In between the water and the sky lay the hills in green.

And I of course just couldn’t wait to paint about it when I got home! And once I did, I grabbed my Strathmore Visual Journal for Watercolor and excitedly painted away. Kuretaki Gansai Tambi was the choice of watercolors as I felt the colors were perfect for this painting. First painted the sea, then the blue sky followed by the sunset in orange and red with an overlay of violet against the blue. The green hills came last, and I just love how some of the red managed to seep through.

It’s not often I get to paint landscapes like this, and I have to say it was quite relaxing! Rather than trying to make the scenery look exactly as what I had seen when I was there, I focused more on the flow and effect of the colors, thereby resulting in something more abstract! A very therapeutic session indeed which ought to be similarly repeated more often…
