Kitty’s Summer of Love

Our little Kitty is having the time of her life! All dressed in a cute frock with a huge hot pink heart on which “love” is carved out . And how sweet being surrounded by all the happy things like flowers whilst imagining she’s underwater watching these pretty fish swim by. Look at all the vivid colors too! We just love the energy the Kitty brings on. And what better chance to illustrate this cuteness during Juliette Crane‘s Whimsical Animals on-line classes!

Bright Background

In this next unit, Adding Sheer Color + Organic Shapes, we aim, as quoted by Juliette herself, “to take everything we’ve been learning even further and create a soft background, then add solid areas of paint to create an animal with lots of depth and layers”. Not sure if my background is soft but that’s ok, I guess I had so much energy in me that I decided to go full on bright! This was then layered on with more colors and doodled in with fish and flowers with a white acrylic marker until I was ready to create my little kitty, which I outlined with a black charcoal pencil.

My Cute Little Kitty

One of the things I learned about following online classes is not to emulate the instructor. It gets frustrating because no matter how hard you try, it never turns out the way you expect. This was especially true in this painting when I decided to go my way once realizing that following Juliette too closely was not working. Of course I grasped the method and ideas at the beginning especially with the background, but for the rest I diverted to my own style. And hence, instead of an owl, I went for a cat instead. Then rather than copy Julliette’s signature dreamy white background, I went for deep shades and let the vivid colors pop out. And of course, I embellished some areas in the end with glitter and glass beads medium. Et voilà, my sweet hippy chic cat!

Art Supplies Used

As you can see, a wide range of art supplies was selected. Golden’s fluid acrylic is typically used in many of Juliette’s classes, but for the fluorescent pink, I went for Amsterdam acrylics. Colored Bombay Inks by Dr. Ph Martins were also introduced this time as were Liquitex Glass Beads medium and Reeve’s pearlescent white. For glitter, I swear by Cosmic Shimmer as well as Ranger’s Stickles. Other textures are also possible with 3D paints my Sennelier and Art by Marlene.

I thoroughly enjoyed this session, especially as it involves a cat! The bright vivid colors certainly brought out a lot of energy too. I also love that dark green background (combination of greens and payne’s grey) which really gives that mysterious aura: Is Kitty in a jungle? Or underwater? Wherever she is, it is a fantasy brought further by all the glowing elements around her… for her Summer of Love!
