Yesterday we drove towards the east part of the Netherlands, all the way to Ruurlo for an art exhibition. This was a special one because it was about CATS! Schattig means cute in Dutch, whilst Kattig implies “catty” so as to make the words rhyme together. And how impressed we were!
Just to Give You an Idea…
The artwork displayed were all amazing, but here I’m sharing my selected favorites. As there are quite numerous I made a collage of them which may show only part of the artwork.

Mixed Media Ideas
Apart from the above paintings, I was further inspired by some of the work created from unconventional methods. Some bright ideas for incorporating in my future artwork!
Chalk Paint
And how about some chalk paint? Usually used for painting furniture, but why not for artwork on canvas? Here some texturizing mediums like modeling paste or plaster may have been used. Love this one by Ralf Koke (1989)!

Sand
Not too keen on the painting itself but I thought the thought of introducing something as “organic from nature” like sand was a brilliant idea! This piece by C.A. Wertheim (1962) was firstly painted by oil first it seems, followed by sprinkling sand on a layer of glue in the background. I should like to develop this idea further by adding sea shells!

Beeswax on Textile
A bit advanced level for now, but I thought this work by Japanese artist Ryo Kinoshita (1985) was intriguing. It took us time to figure this one out, but research describes it as pigment, oil, beeswax, enamel and wood on cotton. A play with texture. I’d be interested to finding out more about how exactly this effect is achieved. Upcoming project!

And what an inspiring exhibition it was. Not only was I awed about the kawaii- ness of all the cats but I was also impressed with the diversity of creativity. Plus so many new ideas for my future artwork! Getting inspired is part of the fun of visiting art exhibitions. Looking forward to creating more!
If you’re in the Netherlands, the Schattig en Kattig exhibition is until 29 June . Click here for more info!
