White Turf: Flat Racing

And here is my third and final painting from the White Turf series! It is a continuation from these digital sketches I made last February on Procreate and wrote about in White Turf 2025 Sketches. To recap, White Turf is horse race event on snow that takes place every year in St. Moritz, Switzerland involving a variety of styles as illustrated below. What great way to practice drawing horses again and incorporate the “kawaii” elements by featuring Little One! And as promised, I colored them all in during my free time and in between my busy schedule, finally completing the set recently.

And here is the final piece, Flat Racing! This event involves no props like sulkies (carriages) or skiis. Also no obstacles or hurdles are set for the horse to jump over and hence “flat” racing. What impressed me most here was the speed at which the horses galloped around the racing circuit and how they just zipped across our eyes. Imagine on snow too! As such, my aim was to let us visualize vitesse in this painting with Little One’s flowing hair and the horse’s tail. Like the other paintings, some tweaking of the sketch took place especially with Little One’s figure and posture to further enhance speed. Mountainous background was also incorporated with all the falling snow.

I must say that this is by far the best of the three paintings in the series I attempted, primarily as I grew more and more confident. Throughout the series, experimenting with all the texture brushes was part of the fun, but it was more the chance to explore beyond my comfort zone which made it more enjoyable. Getting the light and shade correct, for one thing, was a challenge, as was going back to drawing horses again. I would definitely welcome another similar experience like these ones. Perhaps I may like to give it a go with painting the entire series on paper or canvas too!
