Fox Becomes Cat

And here is the second unit to Juliette Crane’s Whimsical Animals on-line classes. How exciting! I love her work and her classes which are so fun to follow especially as she’s so methodical and gives helpful suggestions throughout the sessions. This unit was called “Painting an Animal with Big Eyes“, and my kitty has indeed big eyes!

My animal was actually intended to be a fox as per Juliette’s lesson, but it somehow ended up more as a cat! Not scary enough apparently since my characters are typically too kawaii to be fierce. But that is fine too! We all have our own styles. Although the eyes turned out a bit lopsided, I find it does add to the whimsical look. It was more the attempt to draw the nose and mouth which I had struggled with. Perhaps I could practice on the nose and mouth and challenge my comfort zone a bit more in future. For now, though, the Miffy-style “X” mouth is a good start, and I am happy with the outcome. And what art supplies were used for this?

We mainly chose water-soluble mediums like watercolors and water-soluble oil pastels this time. Kremer Pigmente watercolors are one of my favorite, and as suggested by Juliette I went for Derwent’s Inktense although Neocolor II was also used. Occasionally acrylic paint and pens were used for more intensity. Payne’s grey is a great choice for the background, a shade lighter than black. In the end, I also opted to embellish the painting a bit with some glitter gel, namely with Ranger’s Stickles. This session was a relatively short and quick one, though a bit intense as I’m working slightly beyond my comfort zone. Nevertheless, I certainly enjoyed this session and look forward to the next unit!
