More Whimsical Flowers

And more from my warm-up session from Juliette Crane’s Whimsical Animals on-line classes! Like my last painting Whimsical Flowers, I was in the midst of the first unit, Letting Go + Creating Painted Pages, and decided I also liked the next practice piece. The more practice, the more confidence and less inhibited with letting myself go. How wonderful it was too to get in touch with my inner child again!

Added Cuteness

The same sketchbook as before, Strathmore’s Visual Journal for Mixed Media (A4 size and 300 gsm) and similar media were used for this piece. This time, though, I was more liberal with the acrylic and India inks and more adventurous with the isopropyl alcohol spray. I loved watching all the colors merge and feather especially with the pearlescent inks! Worked on layering more as well. Although I did love the big furry turquoise ball in the middle of the page, it looked rather too dominant and hence I took the plunge and stenciled on some flowers with some pink heavy body acrylic. Little One was also drawn in with a black marking pencil. Such added cuteness!

Mediums Used

I especially love the Acrylic inks by Daler & Rowney. Great combining with India inks, and Dr Ph Martin’s series are wonderful due to the wide range of colors available. I also enjoy working with fluorescent colors, especially since the warmer weather is coming up: Korembi watercolor set and Holbein’s Acryla gouache in luminous lemon. This time, I went for stencils too. Oil paint sticks come handy for tampering down strong colors, and Juliette uses Shiva’s Oilstiks in Antique White.

And what fun was this warm up session! Despite being practice pieces, I really loved the way the some turned out and thought it would be worth sharing here! Like the last painting, though, I also ended up painting flowers rather than animals. Not to fret, the whole point of this exercise was letting go and getting creative…and since the last piece was called Whimsical Flowers, I shall name this one More Whimsical Flowers!
