Finally getting around to resuming some painting classes on-line. I’ve been following Alena Hennessy’s Watercolor Wonder but due to my hectic schedule and frequent foreign travel in 2024, I realized over a year has passed! Now that the travelling is easing a bit, I am hoping to find more spare time to get creative again. It was wonderful to be back painting with Alena the other day. Today’s unit is “Tropical Vibes” which could not come at a more perfect timing as Spring is approaching and weather expected to get warmer!
Watercolor Play
First just playing around with watercolors. I went for Jane Davenport’s paint boxes as I love those beautiful vivid colors and also Kuretake Gansai Tambi for its intensity. On a sheet of Canson’s A4 Watercolor paper (hot pressed, although Alena used cold-pressed), we just painted away intuitively, just going with the flow and watching the colors magically merge and feather. I especially enjoyed seeing how the various colors manage to sync together in harmony. Stunning so far, isn’t it?

Flower Power
Once letting it all dry, flowers and leaves were drawn in with paint pens to enhance these tropical vibes. Here I used Uni Posca in white, ZIG watercolor markers by Kuretake, Molotow acrylic pen and Ecoline ink pens. I really do love how it turned out! Those colors certanly radiate so much energy. Now I’m really looking forward to the Spring!

And what fun that was painting away. I do enjoy working with a free hand and letting my mind go with the flow. You never know what you come up with, and most of the time it ends up unexpectedly amazing. For this reason, I love working with Alena and wish I could spend more time following her classes more often. Let’s hope the coming months don’t get too crazy so I can focus on getting more creative!
