The Lone Cow

And now I’m back from my second ski trip! Got loads to catch up on now. And during my adventures in Switzerland, I also had the opportunity to sketch a bit though on my Procreate app. Soon I will start coloring in the sketches too, but before that or even during that, I would like to work on my art journal about this 5-day sojourn. Meanwhile sharing with you a cute little digital painting I started even before I left for Japan last month. A landscape painting featuring one cow!

Lucky Cow

And why is that? A few months ago whilst driving along the main road of our neighborhood, I was admiring the amazing landscape of the Dutch countryside. All green grass spanning acres and acres. You know that Netherlands is flat which makes the landscape appear so vast! And there stood one cow standing there on her own chilling and basically enjoying her own space. Normally I notice cows here come in herds or in a small team wandering around. But this one was on her own with all that grass and greenery to herself. Lucky cow, I thought. Nobody to bother her and all in her own element. Was quite taken by that and got inspired to paint about it with Procreate!

Coloring It All In

Once I got the basic composition to my satisfaction, I set about coloring in. Customary brush used is the Procreate Airbrush, and this time I went for the Medium Brush for the background first. Another reason for enjoying Procreate is that you get to play around with texture. I of course went for the clouds in the sky. The highlight, though, was experimenting with layers and light modes for the grass to enhance dimension. Here I went for Wildgrass brush in three different layers and switched modes to Darker Color and Screen and having a go at different opacity levels. Light mode to Saturation was also applied to the grey path. And introducing our cute little cow certainly gives a kawaii twist to this simple but eye-catching background!

Great to be back painting again and look forward to more! Just need to set a few hours a day aside during my hectic schedule to relax and enjoy. Until June when I am on a week’s painting workshop in Italy, no further travelling plans which is a great time to sit back, get inspired and get the creative juices flowing!
