Got my haircut the other day near Amsterdam. This time I decided not to get highlights done since my stylist did such a great job the last time blending the new shade with the natural color that the roots are not too obvious. That was in the beginning of October. All I needed was a good trim to keep the ends under control as I prefer to keep my hair long. And on my way to the hairdressers whilst walking from my car, what appears in my path? A cute little white cat! Unfortunately, she was not very friendly. A bit afraid, in fact. She would just stare and then turn away before walking the other direction. Must be a cautious cat. Or a bit grumpy. Maybe she’s been told by her owner or Mama Cat not to speak to strangers! Or she just has a mind of her own. That’s cats for you. Or perhaps she simply didn’t like me, and I’m fine with that. But she was so perfectly white and so pretty that I had to take my time today and paint about it!

This time, a bit of dry media as recently been more into digital art or painting with acrylic or watercolors. How about some soft pastels then? I do love how the colors so vividly pop out and give that velvety texture. Hence a quick sketch this morning on some grey paper, taking an empty page of my Toned Grey sketchpad by Strathmore. First outlined with Stabillo’s Carbothello pastel pencils, then filled in with pastel sticks by Faber Castell for the brighter colors and Cretacolor’s brownscale set for the neutral shades. Pretty straightforward although getting the skin-tone on the face correctly was a challenge. I forgot how “chalky” pastels turn out to be on faces. As for the whites of the eyes, I admit to cheating a bit by resorting to white acrylic ink as I couldn’t manage getting the whites as desired with pastels. Nevertheless, here it is now… A quick spontaneous sketch of me with a new haircut and spotting a cute little white cat!
