Once again, a very busy last few weeks! Been getting a few shipments of Hello Kitty items to add to my collection, but to be honest I’m struggling to find space. I’ve even had to start rearranging and reorganizing storage space at home to make my huge collection more manageable. In the evenings, though, I try and relax a bit and paint. Much of it has been digital art lately, though, as days get shorter and so much darker earlier that I miss the natural daylight to paint properly. Great way to keep practicing digitally though. And what have we here?
New Friend
My mind has been on Hello Kitty of course! Day and night surrounded by this sweet little feline character. And just he other day on Facebook, I came across a photo by a fellow fan who posted one of a Hello Kitty plush sitting on the bed, accompanied by a white cat. Real cat of course. And she titled it “Hello Kitty and Kitty”! Now that’s cute, I thought. And hence the inspiration with this kawaii pencil sketch!

Color My Kitties!
To properly color in white, I firstly switched the background color to grey. This makes it easier to paint the white areas and see what I am doing more visibly, since I intend to have a colored background. As usual, I went for Medium Airbrush and was trying to be as close as possible with the colors of Hello Kitty. My preference is the Classic attire in primary colors: Red ribbon, blue overalls and yellow shirt. Then I transferred this color scheme to the white kitty with the blue eyes and red collar. So far so kawaii!

Choosing the Background
Background was a challenge! I thought an abstract design would be a great idea, a change from the landscape or “ground and sky”. The existing grey background looked a bit too depressing, reinforcing the present gloomy time of year. After trying out light green, light blue, back to grey and then bright green, I finally came up with turquoise blue. Let’s make it all bright and cheerful! A variety of stamps and textures were then introduced as well as some adjustments with lighting mode. Then I merged separately the layers of Hello Kitty and white Kitty and expanded their sizes. And now we’re talking!

Aww, what a cute pair they turned out to be! And so much fun to paint about. This painting definitely brings out some positive vibes to this depressing season with both the cuteness and the vibrant colors. Looking forward getting more creative with Hello Kitty and radiating more energy this winter!
