Wilma in the Sky

Tomorrow is Halloween! And how can we not feature Little One again? On this special holiday, she likes dressing up as a witch and call herself Wilma! How cute is that. The past two paintings for this Halloween Trilogy composed of dry media (colored pencils on paper), wet media (mixed media acrylic on paper) and now, this one will be digital art on Procreate! Another opportunity to play around with texture brushes.

Let’s Paint Wilma!

Decided to start with a dark background, in midnight blue. Then with my Medium Airbrush, I set about drawing Wilma, assigning a different layer for each shape in case I wanted to modify some parts without affecting the whole character. The hair was also in two layers both using the Flowing Hair brush, first in brown then with neon orange on top. Both the lashes and broomsticks were painted with Glitter Pen from the Gold Rush set of brushes . As for the eyes, I firstly drew the Neon Green ovals followed by a layer of white circles using the Neon Tube brush from the Lights set. Both these sets are available on Creative Market. So far so cute isn’t it?

Creating Background

Normally, I work on the background before the subject, but this time I needed a better idea as to what I wanted once the subject was firstly painted. Hence background after. Clouds of course came to mind first, followed by the full moon. Now, figuring out the bottom bit of the painting was a process of trial and error, and I eventually went for Electricity and switched the lighting mode to Linear Light for some gradation so the effect is not too harsh. The broomstick was then further enhanced with some Bokeh and Star Trail brushes. All three of the mentioned textures are from the Lights set. And now, look what we have here!

Isn’t Little One ever so adorable dressed as Wilma the Witch? Painting her was so much fun as well. The wonderful thing about working with Procreate is a wide range of possibilities using texture brushes and being able to tweak as needed: color, size, shape and lighting. I’m very pleased with how this piece turned out and look forward to creating more digital art. Have a Happy and safe Halloween, everyone!
