Mid-October Splash

It’s up and down with the weather this October in the Netherlands. Cold spell here, rainy storms there and now a warm front of almost 20℃ these past two days! Unfortunately, such changes in temperatures do take a toll on our health as some of us like myself have caught colds! Not fun at all. But how to entertain yourself at home then? I tried to paint a bit although my head feels heavy and congested. But I think of bright positive colors to cheer myself up, especially drawing Little One again because we need a bit of kawaii in our lives. And that’s exactly what I did with my Procreate drawing!

The Background

Watercolor brushes seemed like an appealing choice today. I don’t believe I have ever tried them on Procreate and was curious to try something different. The substrate chosen was a premade “canvas” called “Aqua-Real Canvas” which accompanies a set of watercolor brushes by Lisa Glanz, available on Creative Market. I do like the rugged texture of this piece! Apart from the variety of brush shapes, the also includes a wide range of effects with stamps, splotches, streaks and sprays. I chose a grey background color first before playing around with some of these brushes in vivid shades of pink, yellow and green with a bit of light blue. So far so pretty!

Little One in Purple!

And on this pretty background, Little One had the honor to be sketched on! She certainly enjoys the splash around her. Round Brush was primarily used for this piece. I really love that slightly marbly effect the watercolor made on the face, typical for this medium For the hair, I used sketching pencil and round brush. To make the whites of her eyes pop out more, Single Drop seemed a good choice. Rugged Brush was then used for the pretty purple dress and the eyelashes. And I do love the transparent effect the Subtle Duo Color gives for the collar! At the last minute, Teddy Bear was introduced to complete the composition with Bloom Accent. Although this brush is used for smudging, it is perfect for that furry texture. And now, look how sweet Little One looks again!

What fun that was painting this piece! As said earlier, I have never done a watercolor painting digitally, and I am well impressed as to how effective it turns out. The splotches and splashes are pretty cool, and that marbly appearance you get from watercolors are amazing. And I certainly love the energy this painting gives, such positive vibes, already enough to cheer us all up during the coming dreary months. Can’t wait to create another digital painting with water brushes again!
