Just a bit of fun art journaling today in my sketchbook! As I don’t get to do much of that at home, I thought I’d have a little play around with some items at hand and see what I would come up with. Turns out that I created a sort of kawaii abstract piece, firstly starting off with a cut out from a Japanese newspaper, then painting over them and introducing random bits of scrap paper.
The Beginning
Session begins with gluing across the page an excerpt from a Japanese newspaper which turned out to be the Tokyo Stock Exchange listings! Hence, the title of this piece. I made sure that was all glued down evenly by sliding an old credit card up and down and across. And now what to do? The first thing that came to mind was painting something kawaii on it as a contrast to something austere like stock exchange listings! As I have done quite a lot of Little One paintings lately, how about some animals instead? It’s been a while since drawing bunnies and bears so I went for those, pink for the bunny and yellow for the bear firstly with Neocolor II oil pastel then filling in with acrylic ink. This was followed by a strip of washi tape across the top edge. I love how the bunny and bear are transparent so the Japanese letters show through!

Flower Power!
At this point, I wanted the bunny and bear to be center of attention and hence didn’t paint anything around them.. The only thing I did, though, was some mark-making with bubble wrap imprints on the bottom bit of the page with a combination of light and permanent green acrylic paint. That would be the grassy area, I gathered. And now, why not some flowers too? Instead of painting them though, why not some collage paper? I took out my box of scrap paper for this purpose, such as paper napkins and wrapping paper many of which have flower patterns. Included are some die-cut flower shapes using a craft punch and wrapping tissue so they are adequately transparent. Some playing around with the various paper available, and here we have it!

Now that was an inspiring session! A bit of fun with scrap paper and something different. As I do notice other artists painting on odd surfaces like newspapers, pages of old books and even music notes, I thought I would also give it a try! Such does give an interesting edge to the painting. I incidentally chose stock market lisitings as there are no photos on it, just text. So pleased with the outcome that I definitely am up for creating similar stuff like this!
