More Heather & Water Lilies

In my last blog Heather and Water Lilies, I made a watercolor landscape painting about these beautiful flowers. That was when we went on that walk a few weeks ago at the Hoge Veluwe nature reserve in the Netherlands. And now, I wanted to try the digital version, this time also including us in the painting for that kawaii anime effect! Another opportunity to experiment more with the various texture brushes and available blending modes on Procreate as well.

The Background

I experimented with texture from the beginning by painting the sky one third of the screen with the Fresco brush. Then after filling the rest of the screen with a tan Airbrush, I added a layer and scattered some Small Leaf (Jason’s Expressive set available on Creative Market) and switched the blending mode to Add to depict the Heather fields

Adding Subjects

Now introducing us and incorporating the Water Lilies! We were painted in with the usual Medium Airbrush, using different layers for each so we could resize and reposition when needed. For our hair, I always found the Flowing Hair brush handy. The water was then painted on the bottom followed by Water Lillies and the leaves. Choosing two different greens of leaves would give some depth. A separate layer was then dedicated for just the group of flowers, and for the two different greens, a layer was assigned for each so I can play around with the blending mode later.

Finishing Touch

When painting the face and eyes, autoshape comes handy to create that perfect oval. Another useful tool is duplicating and flipping vertically to give symmetry. Although the bright vivid colors of leaves were stunning, I felt they were too dominant and made the entire painting look busy. This is where blending modes come in; Add was applied to the darker green, and for the brighter Green, I selected Screen. A soft shade of Fluorescent pink was further applied on the Lillies followed by yellow stamens. Finally, I drew in the eyelashes with glitter pen just for fun. And now!

Now that is a kawaii romantic painting of us! And how sweet we look happily strolling the nature reserves all awed by the pretty Heather and Water Lilies. Playing around with the texture and blending mode was so much fun too! I love working with Procreate for those reasons. In fact, I do enjoy trying out a variety of mediums and methods of creativity, both digital and analog. Look forward to creating more!
