Back in November, I made an acrylic painting Kitty Behind the Car about a cat sitting idly behind my parked car. It took a few months to get around to completing a digital version of this with Procreate, primarily as I was quite busy the past few months with personal matters and worked on it back and forth. And now finally!
In Summary…
Excerpt from the blog: How adorable! We spotted a cute little cat idly sitting by the bumper of my red Toyota Yaris during our short trip to Ameland the weekend before last. Being dinnertime and getting a bit dark, I hadn’t noticed her until my partner alerted me. “She must have noticed all the Hello Kitty car accessories inside”, I giggled. You see, I have in my car some seat cushions, seat belt covers and even headrest pillows all featuring Hello Kitty! Perhaps they are magnets to attract cats, who knows. At the right moment, my partner took his phone out and took a snapshot of this cat posing by my car. Isn’t that sweet? And now that I have a memorable photo of this cat, I thought I’d make a painting too, Hello Kitty’s included of course! This is what I painted then, acrylic inks and Faber Castell’s Pitt Artists markers on paper.

Digital Version
And here comes the digital version: First I imported the photo this painting onto my Procreate app. The outline was then traced over with the Procreate pencil followed by filling the colors in with the Medium Airbrush. Some of the smaller areas, such as the Hello Kitty ribbons, were tedious but nevertheless exciting to continue. As for the background, how about a change from the same old “sky and ground”? It is no longer autumn and hence something more spring would be great by introducing some textures with some stamps and the Leafy Solid brush. Including shadows from the car would further make it look like the car is on the ground rather than floating in the air. I had initially considered making the car more metallic but left it as it is. Only the letters “MEOW” on the number plate were written in glitter. Et voilà that wasn’t too difficult was it?

So much fun recreating old analog painting into digital Procreate versions! I do like both but in the digital one, the subjects do pop out more but I suppose that has to do with the change in the background. Sometimes, animé and illustrations also look more effective digitally. I’d definitely like to recreate more like this from my paintings and see what I come up with. Meanwhile, I think the my Hello Kitty’s are happy to have made new friend!
