My last blog post was about my attempt to draw sheep which eventually turned into a cool abstract painting. Following that, though, I was determined to get it right this time and began practicing on my sketchbook. What was intended to be practice though in turn resulted in a fun painting! A great opportunity too to try out my new gouache paints I had bought during my trip to Japan weeks ago. And what fun that was!
Counting Sheep
After doodling a few lambs and sheep on a blank A4 page of Strathmore’s Visual Journal, I thought why not develop this into something cute? These doodles were, by the way, inspired by some of the anime-type samples I had found whilst Googling on the internet. How kawaii! I traced the pencil doodles over with Molotow Acrylic Markers in silver. Then some random text and writing followed, whatever came into my mind, this time with gold acrylic markers. So far, so sweet!

Background First
The gouache paints purchased in Japan is a brand called Turner’s which I have yet to see in Europe. A vast variety of them was collected, including the pearlescent range (12 colors), pastel-color range (5 colors as one was out of stock) and of course glitter (12 colors). After having tested one of the pastel pink ones on one of the sheep, I was pleased how it looked so decided to paint the background, this time with some pearlescent shades by combining emerald and yellow-green. Loving it so far, although I did notice the acrylic marker smudging a bit when wet brush with the gouache was applied on top. Perhaps I should have waited longer for it to dry?

Pink Lambs
And now my sheep is going to be pink, I decided. Apart from cuteness, another reason for this is that I wanted to try out the pastel-colors range of the Turner Gouache: Pastel Rose, Pastel Pink and Pastel Lilac. Can you guess which one is which? The eyes were enhanced by tracing over with the same silver Acrylic marker. Two of the lambs had their faces changed, though, one out of preference and the other because I had messed up. They were merely covered up with some Gesso and corrected once dry. The horns were then filled in with some silver glittery gouache which turned out rather well. Finally some finishing touches with some small flower embellishments I had also bought in Japan at a 100-shop. Filled in the exclamation mark and heart with blue marker and now!

I’m rather pleased how this quick painting turned out. Just some brisk doodles simply filled in with gouache paint along with a bit of glitter and shine. I do love the Turner gouache too which is as good as the Holbein brands. Following this practice, I hope to be able to create another sheep and lamb painting shortly. Perhaps even include Little One in it, as she enjoys going for neighborhood strolls and seeing all the cute lambs roaming around the fields!
