I’m back again! This few-days absence from blogging was due to our weekend away to an island up the north of the Netherlands called Ameland. About 270 square kilometers with 4000 or so inhabitants, it is one of the four Wadden Islands belonging to the Friesland Province only reachable by boat from the mainland. What makes it special is that much of the coast is sand dunes surrounded by so much nature. Not surprising then to discover it is indeed part of the UNESCO World Heritage. And so impressed I was and so much fun we had that I, as usual, did a few kawaii pen sketches to describe our short time there!
Plain Sailing…
Up and early we were for a two hour drive to Holwerd, a small harbor in Friesland (north of Netherlands) to catch a car ferry to Ameland. It was an hour boat ride. Not a very fast journey because the Wadden Sea is known to be world’s largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats. Along the way, you can also see some sand bars with birds on them. How cool is that! My partner further told me there are areas in the sea on which you can even take a 6-hour WALK between the mainland and Ameland in the wet sand, something he did during a school trip as a teenager. What an experience that must have been! I was very much looking forward to reaching Ameland, and all was going well during the sail until…

Uh Oh…
…I had the misfortune of dropping my phone whilst taking a photo! The screen area shattered on the edge, but fortunately, it was just the screen protector rather than the glass itself. The crack was not too big but quickly spread to the corner. How annoying, given I had a new protector sheet laid out two weeks ago! The rest of the afternoon I was not in the best mood which was a pity because I could have enjoyed the views of the nature more. But when we got to the hotel and discovered how spacious and beautiful our room was, that silly phone catastrophe was soon forgotten. I was determined not to let that ruin our weekend. And now, my next thought was that we deserved some luxurious dinner! How about some fish soup and fresh lobster, all locally sourced? What a wonderful treat that was. And I was happy again, all ready for our adventures for the next day…
