All Bunnied Up

Come the middle of the summer, and during our walks we came across quite a few bunny hares hopping around the field. How cute! And Little One, of course, thought so too and decided to wear her homemade bunny ears which she wants you to see. Now she can really enjoy the garden full of flowers and green pretending to be a hare. What a great opportunity to paint about this then!

The Beginning

Started with a page from my Strathmore Mixed Media sketchbook on which I had smudged some leftover paint from an earlier painting. Then introduced some color blocks with yellow and blue acrylic paint as well as some random collage materials such as wrapping paper, paper napkins and deli paper scribbled on with Copic markers intended for collage work. The middle was deliberately left blank to paint in my character.

Character Development

I then sketched Little One in bunny ears and also decided the top right corner could be the sun. First I painted in the face (quinacridone azo nickel gold and titanium white fluid acrylic). Some Cobalt Blue combined with white paint was then applied for the sky and light green ink for the ground but I worked around the character and the flowers, thereby creating negative space for them. Next I worked on the hair followed by the eyes. So far so good. And loving the vivid colors!

Finishing Up

Little One is going to be pretty in pink now! Went over the dress with a thin layer of white ink, let it dry and layered on some pearlescent pink acrylic ink. Didn’t like the magenta stripe on her left ear and hence created a negative space heart shape with white paint. As for the ground, I filled in the blank flower shapes with violet acrylic ink before dabbing on some matching glitter glue. Then more plants introduced with some paper napkin collages. I finally worked on her eyes and lined her lashes with black glitter glue. And I think we’re done here!

Enjoyed this mixed media session, playing around with various possibilities including combining collage art with painting. These bright lively colors, too, make the painting so happy and with so much positive energy. Most of all, Little One turned out ever so adorable donned in her bunny ears and enjoying her surroundings. Looking forward to painting more about her again soon!
